Hazard Guide
Identifying, Assessing, and Controlling Hazards

Environmental Hazards

Hazards coming from the weather such as heat, sunburn, cold, frostbite, rain, wind, lightning, ice (falling or slippery ground), glare or dull lighting or lack of visibility.

Environmental Hazards
Construction Industry Examples
  • Working outside especially when exposed to weather conditions without shelter such as working on top built floor, roof or open blocks of land
Tips on Identifying
  • Monitor weather conditions and have contingent work that removes workers from exposure.

Control Method Examples:

More Effective

Elimination

Substitution

Engineering Controls

Shelters, articifial lighting/head lamps; Make physical modifications to facilities, equipment, processes to reduce exposure. Establish cooling areas with shade and water.

Administrative Controls

Monitor weather conditons frequently; Move tasks to cooler days, times (typically before 11 a.m.) or environments.

Change work practices and policies to limit the risk. Use fans and blowers to facilitate air circulation.

PPE

CSA approved work boots, long sleeves, work gloves and other PPE that protects worker from getting cut or punctured.
